Tour Plan
Early Morning Departure
The day starts early with a transfer to the Nairobi SGR station for the morning train to Suswa. Departing at around 8:00 AM, the train ride offers scenic views of the Nairobi National Park, the escarpments of the Rift Valley, and open savannah landscapes. After approximately two hours, we arrive at Suswa station, where a 4x4 vehicle awaits to take us on an off-road journey through the vast Maasai plains to the base of the mountain.
Hiking to the Crater Rim
The hike begins mid-morning, starting with a gradual ascent through rugged terrain covered in volcanic rock and acacia trees. Along the way, expect to see troops of baboons, hyraxes, and birds of prey circling above. As we climb higher, the view expands to reveal the vast expanse of the Great Rift Valley. The hike takes about three hours to reach the crater rim, where we pause to take in the breathtaking scenery of the double-crater formation that makes Mount Suswa unique.
Exploring the Lava Caves
After a well-earned rest at the top, we descend towards the famous Suswa lava caves. These underground tunnels, formed by ancient lava flows, stretch for kilometers beneath the mountain. With a guide leading the way, we navigate through sections of the caves, some of which are home to large bat colonies. The caves also hold cultural significance for the local Maasai community, who use them for ceremonies and shelter.
Lunch & Cultural Interaction
We take a break for lunch, either enjoying packed meals in a scenic spot or a traditional Maasai meal prepared by the locals. This is also a great opportunity to learn more about the Maasai way of life, their traditions, and their connection to Mount Suswa.
Return Journey to Nairobi
In the afternoon, we begin our journey back to Suswa station, where we board the return train to Nairobi. The ride offers a chance to relax and take in the views one last time. By early evening, we arrive in Nairobi, wrapping up a day filled with adventure, exploration, and cultural encounters.
This Mount Suswa hiking tour is perfect for anyone looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure near Nairobi. With its stunning landscapes, fascinating caves, and immersive cultural experiences, it’s an ideal getaway for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
